Cop found dead after ramming car parked by roadside

Police place the body of the policeman in a bag to be taken to Miri Hospital for a postmortem.

MIRI: A 54-year-old policeman died from what appeared to be a heart attack before ramming a car parked by the roadside at Pelita Commercial Centre at about 10.15am yesterday.

Corporal Martin Peter Nyiron who was attached to the Mobile Petrol Vehicle (MPV) unit here had gone to the area with his wife.

While driving through the shops at the area, Martin was believed to succumb to a heart attack, causing him to lost control of the vehicle which rammed a Toyota Avanza parked by the roadside.

The accident drew a crowd having breakfast nearby.

A team of paramedics from Miri Hospital arrived at the scene minutes after receiving a call.

The team pronounced the victim dead and handed over the body to the police who were also called to the scene.

Personnel from Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station in a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Response Services (EMRS) van rushed to the scene to help remove the body from the vehicle before it was sent to Miri Hospital for a post-mortem.

Deputy chief of State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, DSP Bingkok John when contacted yesterday confirmed the incident.

Police are investigating.
