KUCHING: Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) arrested five persons and seized 442 logs and two longboats during a joint operation with Kanowit Police on Sunday.

The enforcement team, comprising personnel from SFC’s Sibu regional office and Kanowit Police Station, initially came upon 401 unattended logs that had been rafted and ‘anchored’ off the bank of Nanga Dap, seemingly ready to be towed to another destination, a spokesman from SFC said in a statement yesterday.

“Subsequently, after waiting for five hours, five suspects in two longboats were nabbed while trying to remove a further 41 rafted logs from the vicinity of the raid,” he said.

The spokesman added the suspects were unable to produce any document to prove legal ownership of the logs.

“Additionally, the logs did not bear any official markings and were therefore believed to have been illegally extracted.”

Police reports on the operation were lodged at Kanowit Police Station and the case has been handed over to the relevant authority for further investigation.
