KUCHING: A 25-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of committing snatch theft against a woman last Saturday.

Deputy district police deputy chief DSP Abang Junaidi Anuar said a CID team led by ASP Ooi Jin Bing were able to nab the suspect following a raid on a house at Kampung Tabuan, here around 12.30pm.

“The suspect admitted snatching the gold necklace and claimed to have sold the jewellery to a man known as ‘Mahmud’,” he said, adding that police are now trying to locate and recover the stolen necklace.

He noted that the suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine and had two previous criminal records.

The snatch theft took place near the General Post Office at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg around 6.30pm when the victim was waiting to be fetched by her father.

The 22-year-old victim, who works at a goldsmith shop, was approached by an unknown man who first grabbed her mobile phone from her hand.

In the ensuing struggle, he snatched her gold necklace and fled the scene. The victim was uninjured in the incident.
