KUALA BERANG: The success of the Free Trade Zone Digital Zone (DFTZ) in exceeding its target of 1,500 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is seen as a good sign in terms of the people’s economic growth.

Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said the DFTZ launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday was one of the government’s efforts in transforming the digital platform to boost the economy.

“In the 2018 budget there was also a RM100 million allocation to expand the eUsahawan and e-Rezeki programmes and we should be proud that DFTZ has materialised in just one year after discussions between the Malaysian government and Alibaba Group founder/executive chairman Jack Ma.

“This proves that we are very focused in promoting the digital economy … God willing with the budget announcement last week, we will be able by next year to actively promote and capitalise on the digital economy,” he told reporters at a community activity in Kampung Teris here, yesterday.

On Friday Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Jack Ma launched the first phase of the DFTZ in Aeropolis Park, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) which is Alibaba Group’s first e-fulfillment hub outside China.

The Hulu Terengganu MP said more SME companies were expected to participate in the DFTZ, which could help local small and medium companies market their products globally. — Bernama
