KUANTAN: Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) has been urged to be proactive in going to the ground and disseminate accurate information to the grassroots.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said the national news provider had a responsibility to counter falsehoods and half truths that were freely circulated through social media to disparage the government.

“We do not want the people to be confused with information that are inaccurate.

“The people should be able to rely on official media such as RTM to get credible information.

“We are thankful to be living in a country that is peaceful and enjoying economic development.

Our country is in a good position, it shows that the government is doing the right thing and in a responsible manner,” he said.

However, he said, certain quarters were not happy with the country’s achievement and constantly scheming to disunite the people.

“Hence why it is crucial for us to plant that concord among us and reconcile our differences to ensure that the government gets the support it needed,” he said at a ‘Moh La Weh’ RTM ‘Sehati’ (One Heart) carnival in Serambi Teruntum here yesterday.

The event was also attended by Pahang Women and Family Development, Communications and Multimedia Committee chairman Datuk Shahaniza Shamsuddin and Pahang state secretary Datuk Seri Muhammad Safian Ismail.

Also present were East Coast Economic Region Development Council chief executive officer Datuk Seri Jebasingam Issace John and Communications and Multimedia Ministry policy deputy secretary-general Shakib Ahmad Shahir.

Salleh also announced the launch of seven RTM channels on Astro NJOI, namely, Nasional FM, Traxx FM, Ai FM, Minnal FM, Sabah FM, Wai FM and Asyik FM.

Meanwhile, the minister said RTM would organise four carnivals and 20 Sehati fiesta next year. — Bernama
