Golfing brother, sister set for Japan tourney

KUCHING: Sarawak junior golf siblings Angel and Saxon Hii are looking forward to compete in the Enagic Asia Junior Golf Championship in Okinawa, Japan in April next year.

The duo booked their tickets to the Japan tournament after excelling at the Enagic Malaysia Junior Golf Qualifying event at Permas Jaya Golf Club in Johor last weekend.

Angel registered a two-day total score of 155 (77, 79) to beat 14 other girls in the U14 category.

In second and third spots were Grace Chin of Kuala Lumpur (156)  and Fong Zi Yu of Selangor (159) respectively.

This is 13-year-old Angel’s second bid to qualify for the prestigious championship in Japan after she finished second in last year’s qualifying.

In the Boys U14 category, Saxon carded a 77 on Saturday and a 76 on Sunday for a two-day total of 153, losing to champion Nor Harith of Johor by five strokes while pipping Mohd Afiq of Kuala Lumpur who finished third with 154.

A proud and delighted Albert Aloysious Hii said it was a major breakthrough for his children.

“They also qualified for the Japan meet last year when they finished in second place in their respective categories but this time around both will be sponsored by the organisers to compete in the championship.

“However, it will be be tough for them because they will be pitting their skills against the best in Asia, with qualifiers from Philippines, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan,” he added.

But he believes Angel and Saxon will gain valuable experience from the international competition.
