One killed, three injured after car plunges into ravine

KUCHING: A 58-year-old woman was killed and four others, including a three-year-old child were injured after the compact car they were travelling in plunged into a ravine at Kilometre 31, Jalan Sri Aman—Kuching on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Norhayati Abdullah @ Timoi Nopit, from Kampung Bijuray Krokong, who was a rear passenger. She suffered serious head injuries and later succumbed to her injuries at 11.45pm while receiving treatment at Sri Aman Hospital.

State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department deputy chief DSP Bingkok John said initial investigation revealed that the car was heading towards Kuching from Sibu.

“The 4pm incident occurred when the driver lost control and skidded to the left side of the road before plunging into the ravine,” he said when contacted yesterday.

All victims were extricated out of the overturned vehicle by the passers-by and were rushed to the hospital from treatment. It was learnt that one of the victims who was seriously injured has been referred to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment yesterday.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transportation Act 1987.
