ASSISTANT Minister of Rural Electricity Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi is optimistic that the state government’s emphasis on digital economy can propel Sarawak to become an advanced state in Malaysia within the next ten years.

He said this is evident from the focus given by the State Budget 2018 to digital economy which can accelerate the development of the state’s economy.

“I am confident that the budget this time, which focuses on digital economy, will enable our state’s economy to grow more rapidly,” he said when met at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here yesterday.

The Pantai Damai assemblyman also expressed his support for Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s aspiration for Sarawak to emulate Estonia, a country which has become advanced through digital economy.

“Estonia used to be a poor country but now it has emerged to be an advanced country in Europe after it emphasised on digital economy within a period of 15 years,” he said.

On the budget’s emphasis on rural development, Dr Abdul Rahman said this was in line with the state government’s aspiration to bridge the development gap between the urban and rural areas.

“With allocation specifically for rural areas, this can accelerate rural development particularly in terms of infrastructure.”
