Man denies robbing woman with machete

KOTA KINABALU: A 21-year-old man has been charged in the Sessions Court with robbing a woman armed with a machete.

The accused, Mohd Syafiq Akmal Mohd Sukri, who appeared before Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim, pleaded not guilty to the charge after it read out to him, yesterday.

He was accused of robbing one Rita Maah, 47, of two handphones, a power bank and RM1,130 cash at the Kedai Runcit Ala Mambo in Kg Bontoi, Tamparuli at 2.35 pm on October 8.

He allegedly committed the offence with accomplices who are still at large.

The offence under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

Sessions judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim fixed Dec 11 for pre-trial case management and allowed Mohd Syafiq to be released him on bail of RM7,000 in two local sureties on condition that he reports to the nearest police station every month.

Deputy public prosecutor, Dinesh Raja, acted for the prosecution while Mohd Syafiq was represented by counsel Chong Kian Ming.
