KUCHING: A 33-member delegation from Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) yesterday paid a courtesy call on Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at this office at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Building.

Awang Tengah is also Urban Development and Natural Resources Second Minister and Industrial and Entrepreneur Development Minister.

Led by its president Dr Hii Sui Cheng, the group was there to present the minister with their proposal, following his announcement last month that the government will build a new industrial park for SMEs in Sibu.

“Our members are excited and very encouraged by your announcement of a 100-acre industrial estate in Sibu. We’d like to propose that it be located along the Sibu-Tanjung Manis Road as it is ideal for export-oriented SMEs, with Tanjung Manis serving as the port for the export of their products,” said Hii.

This also contributes to better utilisation of the port facilities, he added.

Hii requested that Awang Tengah reserve one or two places in his delegation in future trade missions.

“As we plan to set up an entrepreneur innovation hub in Sibu, much like the Malaysia Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) in Bintawa, we would like to seek your ministry’s financial assistance for the project.”

The hub will be used to groom Sibu youths into successful entrepreneurs.

“We will submit the proposal in greater detail once ready.”

SCCCI also suggested that the ministry look into the possible redevelopment of old residential areas like Bukit Assek, Tiong Sang Road, Jalan Huo Ping, Jalan Emplam, Jalan Tiong Hua and part of Pedada Road.

“These areas are quite rundown and pose health risks like dengue fever. A state government-led model of redevelopment is perhaps the way forward,” said Hii, adding that it is important to revive and beautify the town centre.

The delegation, who took a day trip from Sibu, also visited several other places in Kuching including the CCK Farm, Kuching City Mall Development Project, Longi (Kch) Sdn Bhd Solar Producing Company, and MaGIC at Borneo 744.
