School teacher jailed for using fake IC

KOTA KINABALU: A primary school teacher was slapped with a 24-month  jail sentence for using a fake identity card.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie imposed the sentence on Asni Ismail, 39, after the latter pleaded guilty to the offence yesterday.

Asni, who had been a teacher for 12 years, was arrested for using the fake identity card bearing the numbers 780331-12-5186 under her own name, at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kinarasan in Ranau on November 6.

The offence was framed under Rule 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, which carries a jail term of up to three years or a maximum fine of RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

The jail sentence took effect from her date of arrest and she was also ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving the sentence.

Based on the facts of the case, on June 15, the National Registration Department in Ranau received an application for an identity card verification bearing the numbers 780331-12-5186 under the name of Asni Binti Ismail.

Upon checking, the record of the identity card was not found in the computer system and it was referred to the investigation and enforcement division for further action.

Then, investigation revealed that the identity card was fake.

Prosecuting officer from the National Registration Department, Mohamad Faizal Tahir, prosecuted while Asni was represented by a counsel from Ansari & Co.
