KUALA LUMPUR: Newcastle University, which has a campus in Malaysia, and University of Malaya recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) setting out their intention to collaborate more closely.
The MoU builds on the partnership between Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) and University of Malaya for dementia research in Malaysia, said a press release from Kuala Lumpur.
It was signed by Pro Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University, Professor Richard Davies and his counterpart at the University of Malaya, Associate Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Kamila Ghazali at a ceremony held at Jalan University, Kuala Lumpur.
Also in attendance were Provost and CEO of Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, Professor Roger Barton and Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya, Professor Dr Zanariah Abdullah who witnessed the signing of the document.
Professor Richard said: “This is another step towards strengthening ties between Newcastle University and the University of Malaya. Both universities are committed to extending their collaboration to help make a positive impact on global health problems.”
The new MoU builds on the partnership with the University of Malaya and Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia in the Global Health Research Group on Dementia Prevention and Enhanced Care (DePEC), a Global Health project funded by the UK’s National Institute for Health Research.
The universities are working together to investigate current social, policy and service set ups for people with dementia in Malaysia.
“We are delighted that the University of Malaya’s work with Newcastle University has extended beyond Malaysia. The University of Malaya has been an important partner on our journey to tackle dementia in Malaysia and we look forward to enhancing our relationship further.” said Professor Roger.
