SMK Kabong, SMK Penrissen stay on course for finals

KUCHING: SMK Kabong had a good day at the SSC-MSNS Inter-Centre Of Development For Hockey Competition at the Sarawak Hockey Stadium along Jalan Padungan yesterday.

The school team from Betong remained unbeaten in the round-robin league and collected five points from three games, beating Serian 2-0 and drawing 0-0 with SMK Bau and SMK Penrissen in the boys category.

Coached by Mohd Nor Faiz Matali and his assistant Ben Dalton Poreng, SMK Kabong will play the remaining two matches against SMK Bako and SMK Tebakang today.

SMK Penrissen are the table-toppers after beating SMK Tebakang 2-0, SMK Serian 4-0 and drawing 0-0 with SMK Kabong to collect seven points from three games.

They are to play SMK Bau and SMK Bako in their remaining matches today.

Other match-ups are SMK Spaoh versus SMK Bau and SMK Serian versus SMK Bau.

In the girls competition, SM St Columba are leading the four-team contest with four points after they blanked SMK Spaoh 3-0 and drew 1-1 with SMK Bau.

Virtually already booked their ticket in the final, the team from Miri will wrap up their preliminary round campaign against SMK Sebauh today while the other match between SMK Spaoh and SMK Bau will sort of decide who goes into the final.

SMK Bau has two points from two draws with SMK St Columba (1-1) and SMK Sebauh (1-1) while SMK Sebauh also have two points after drawing with SMK Bau (1-1) and SMK Spaoh (0-0).

The top two teams in the boys and girls competitions qualify for the finals.

The main objective of the competition is to unearth new talents to be groomed into calibre players for the state squads.
