KUCHING: English Premier League Liverpool Football Club’s legends John Barnes and Robbie Fowler are in town for the shooting of a travel documentary highlighting, among other tourist spots, the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) in Santubong.

A post from yesterday on the Facebook page confirmed this visit.

Two sources from the local tourism industry said they could not divulge further information, as respect for the former footballers’ privacy and the filming crew, but it was understood that the duo arrived yesterday and might depart Kuching today.

According to Wikipedia, Barnes was named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year twice – in 1987/88 and 1989/90 series of the EPL. He was also the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year in 1987/88.

In the run up to England’s 1990 FIFA World Cup campaign, he recorded a rap for the official team song, New Order’s ‘World in Motion’ and in 2005, Barnes was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.

He played for Liverpool as a winger in 1987 to 1997, appearing for the club 403 times and scored a total of 106 goals. With Liverpool he won the First Division twice and the English FA Cup twice.

The 54-year-old retired as footballer in 1999 when he was with Charlton Athletic and moved on in life as a coach with Celtic (Scotland) from 1999 to 2000 and manager of Jamaican national team (2008 to 2009) and Tranmere Rovers (England) for four months in 2009.

Fowler, 42, was a striker who played for Liverpool Youth team from 1984 to 1993 before playing as senior from 1993 to 2001.

He subsequently played for Leeds United and Manchester City before making a comeback to Liverpool in 2006. Due to his ruthlessness in front of goals he was nicknamed ‘God’ by Liverpool fans. He scored 183 goals for the club.

Both Barnes and Fowler were members of the England Squad in their heydays.
