KUCHING: A female Immigration Department officer was yesterday discharged and acquitted of graft by the Sessions Court here.

Gracie Bohan, 35, was acquitted at the end of the prosecution’s case without her defence being called.

Presiding judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish a prime facie case against her.

Gracie was accused of accepting RM200 from a man via an online banking transaction between January and December last year.

Graft, under Section 165 of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment term of up to two years or with fine, or both, upon conviction.

In an unrelated case, two Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officers were released following the expiry of their remand order yesterday over their alleged involvement with foreign fishermen encroaching in state waters.

The men, aged 50 and 53 years, had been in Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) custody since Nov 6 to facilitate the agency’s investigation under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

The duo was among 22 individuals nabbed in a nationwide sweep dubbed Op Armada against an illegal fishing syndicate.
