MIRI: A student of SMK Chung Hua Miri made her school proud upon being given the ‘Most Promising Writer Award’ at the recent DKLS Linguistic Ambassador Award 2017 Essay Writing Competition.

Gladys Goh was amongst the seven recipients of the award, which earned each of them the DKLS Foundation ‘Hallmark of Distinction’ trophy, a certificate of recognition and 10 co-curriculum marks.

The other recipients were Clarise Tan of SMK Subang Jaya in Selangor, Ng En Qing of SMK Ave Maria Covent in Perak, Nurkhaliesah Adibah Abu Bakar of SM Sains Seri Puteri in Kuala Lumpur, Sarah Sallehhudin of SMK Sri Andalas in Selangor, Satganessh Suria Kumar of SMK Buyong Adil in Perak, and Shahyra Dayana Md Shah of SMK USJ 12 in Selangor.

Jointly run by DKLS Foundation and its partners including ELS Language Centres, ICT Learning and the Australian National University (ANU), the competition is aimed at promoting and enhancing the use of the English language amongst Malaysian secondary students, as well as cultivating in them the appreciation for creative writing, the power of expression and the value of linguistic excellence.

Following the success of its inaugural event that gathered more than 8,000 participants, the second instalment saw the participation of 22,224 students from all over the country.

The contestants went through a nine-week comprehensive online interactive English Language writing programme meant to prepare them for SPM’s English Language as well as the competition using Sunago Education’s online social learning portal, ‘SunagoLearn’.

A total of 771 essays were submitted for the competition at the end of the course – each reviewed and filtered by Sunago Education team before being graded by a panel of judges from the Ministry of Education, ANU and ELS Language Centres.

From there, 10 candidates were shortlisted for the final interview with the panel from DKLS Linguitic Ambassador Award.

The winner – known as the ‘gold medallist’ – of the competition would be given the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the excellent education environment at the ANU and the quality of life in Australia through a fully-sponsored seven-day study tour.

“We’re very proud of Gladys as she made the cut after being shortlisted into the finale – seeing her talent recognised has thrilled us a lot. It has become an encouragement for all of our students to follow in her footsteps,” said SMK Chung Hua Miri principal Wong King Kui.
