SIBU: A school teacher was yesterday sentenced by the Magistrate’s Court here to three years in jail and RM5,000 fine after she was found guilty of reckless driving which led to the death of a student.

Magistrate Sofia S. Sawayan also ordered the suspension of Wong Ching Ching’s driving licence for a period of five years.

Wong, 42, was convicted of driving dangerously along Deshon Road on March 5, 2014 which resulted in an accident in front of SMK Rosli Dhoby at 6.10am.

In the accident, student Adeline Ngu Xin Ying, who was 15 years and four months old then, was killed while walking along the road.

Wong had just left her house in Apollo Road when the accident happpened.

She was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides for a jail term between two and 10 years, and fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000.

Her counsel, Yap Hoi Liong, pleaded for leniency saying she has to take care of her disabled 11-year-old son.

Yap said the accused has been a teacher since 1997, had good conduct in her employment and had to look after her only son.

He also told the court that Wong had no previous conviction.

The prosecution, represented by DPP Don Stiwin, on the other hand, urged the court to pass a deterrent sentence considering the seriousness of the offence which was committed near a school.

Wong is said to have decided to file an appeal to the High Court.
