Teacher files appeal to High Court over reckless driving sentence

SIBU: A school teacher filed an appeal at the High Court here yesterday over her three-year jail sentence and RM5,000 fine for reckless driving which led to the death of a student.

Judge Dato Lee Heng Cheong released Wong Ching Ching, 42, on a RM4,000 bail with two sureties pending hearing of the appeal filed in by Wong’s counsel, Yap Hoi Liong.

On Monday, magistrate Sofia S. Sawayan convicted Wong and handed down the jail sentence and fine, while also suspending her driver’s licence for a period of five years.

Wong was found guilty of reckless driving along Deshon Road on March 5, 2014 which caused an accident in front of SMK Rosli Dhoby at 6.10am.

In the accident, Adeline Ngu Xin Ying, who was 15 years and four months old then, was killed while walking along the road.

The offence, listed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, provides for a jail term of between two and 10 years and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000.
