Unrepentant drug addict gets five years’ jail for latest offence

KUCHING: A drug addict with two past convictions for consuming drugs received a lengthy prison sentence in the Sessions Court here yesterday for committing a similar offence.

Mahmud Bujang was handed a five-year jail term and ordered to be placed under supervision for two years upon the completion of the custodial sentence.

Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad sentenced the wireman after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The section was read together with Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act, which provides an imprisonment of not less than five years and not

exceeding seven years, and no more than three strokes of the cane.

Under the section, it is also compulsory for the offender to be placed under police surveillance for a period of not less than two years and not more than three years.

Mahmud was caught after he tested positive for drugs at the Kuching Narcotics Crime Investigation Department office at 2am on Nov 4 last year.
