11 teams compete in Baram basketball tourney

MARUDI: A tournament for Chinese-medium schools is being organised by Baram Basketball Association at their court at Kampung Cina here from Nov 12-16.

SJK Chung Hua (2 teams), SJK Sg Jaong (3 teams ) and SJK Hua Nam (2 teams) are competing in the boy’s category while SJK Chung Hua, SJK Hua Nam and SJK Sg Jaong (2 teams) are vying for the girl’s title.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the new Chinese Kapitan William Lim Kim Hin on behalf of Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, Marudi assemblyman and Assistant Minister for Local Government

In his speech, Lim spoke on the benefits of sports participation among the young such as fostering better relationships and promoting unity in the community.

He called on the students, as the leaders of tomorrow, to showcase good conduct.

Playing sports and games, he added, will build character and keep them away from unhealthy activities such as drug addiction and ‘lepak.’

Lim also announced the MRP grant of RM10,000 by Penguang to Baram BasketbBall Association.

Also present at the ceremony were association chairman Huong Haw Hii, Pemanca Chong Chin Hui and Penghulu Tie King Un.
