SIBU: The national level `Golden Glove’ boxing championship to be held at the Sibu Indoor Stadium from Nov 27 to Dec 3 has attracted 76 entries so far.

Sarawak Boxing Association president Dato Rahman Lariwoo said the entries are from various parts of the country.

The event, he said, is jointly organised by the Sarawak Boxing Association, Sarawak State Sports Council and Ministry of Youth and Sports with the support of Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM).

He told a press conference yesterday that ATM and Felda will also be sending boxers for the championship.

Rahman, who is also the Commonwealth Games Malaysia team manager, said Commonwealth Games 1998 gold medalist Major Sapok Biki is also expected to join in the bouts.

“The event will pick boxers to represent Malaysia for higher level championships.

“It is also our intention to turn Sarawak into a boxing powerhouse in the country,” he added.

Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapa’ee will officiate at the opening ceremony on Nov 27 at 8pm while Second Finance Minister and Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh will grace the closing on Dec 3 at 8pm.

The championship has nine categories and is open to those between 18 years old and 40 years old.

31st Brigade Infantry Commander Brigadier General Dato Fadzil Tajudin and Sarawak State Sports Council Sibu head Gloria James were among those present at the press conference.
