KUCHING: The recent signing of an Articulation Agreement between the International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i-CATS) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur will provide an important gateway for students from Sarawak to pursue UTM’s Bachelor’s degree programmes in Electronic Systems Engineering and Mechanical Precision Engineering.

In its press statement yesterday, i-CATS said the signing of the agreement witnessed by Minister of Higher Education, Malaysia Dato’ Seri Idris bin Jusoh. was held at UTM’s Kuala Lumpur Campus as one of the highlights of the university’s annual signature event-The Japan Day.

The agreement are for two degree programmes – Bachelor of Electronic Systems Engineering and Bachelor of Mechanical Precision Engineering offered by UTM’s Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT).

MJIT was established in 2010 as a joint venture between the Governments of Malaysia and Japan to offer a Japanese-style education at the Kuala Lumpur Campus of UTM.

i-CATS chief executive officer Mohamad Isham Fauzi said with the agreement, students would be able to complete the first year of the Bachelor’s Degree programmes at the i-CATS West Campus in Kuching, before continuing their studies from year 2 to 4 at UTM’s Campus in Kuala Lumpur. Under MJIIT’s Global Mobility Programme, students would be able to spend a semester in Japan.

“Indeed, industrial training in Japan will give students the opportunity to acquire industry best practices and global perspective in their fields, as well as give students a competitive edge when they enter the work market.”

Mohamad Isham also highlighted that the tie-up with UTM-MJIIT would also set the stage for a host of joint initiatives, to facilitate advances in teaching and learning for both staff and students at both institutions.

Also present at the signing ceremony were members of the PPKS/i-CATS delegation comprising the chairman of Pusat Pembangunan Kemahiran Sarawak (PPKS) & i-CAT president  Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, secretary of PPKS Management Council and director of PPKS Ilmu Sdn Bhd Dato Maznah Dasmi and executive director of PPKS and managing director of PPKS Ilmu Sdn Bhd Hallman Sabri.
