Sarawak Police gearing up for WIEF

KUCHING: The Sarawak Police contingent is gearing up to ensure the security and safety of delegates who will be attending the three day -13th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) which Kuching is hosting from tomorrow until Thursday.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Amer Awal said all the elements of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) involving their Mobile Patrol Vehicles (MPV), Police Motorcycle Unit (URV) and the Tourist Police Bicycle Unit will be mobilised during the forum.

“A total of 1,402 personnel will be deployed during the three-day forum,” said Amer to reporters after a symbolic flag-off of a dry run exercise involving the traffic police in front of the Riverside Majestic Hotel yesterday.

The dry-run for the traffic police was held along the protocol routes where VVIPs and world leaders will be traversing from their hotel to the BCCK and back.

The Sarawak Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has also mobilised its personnel to conduct checks at hotels and other hotspots around the city.

Areas such as the Kuching Waterfront will also see the presence of more police personnel conducting patrols and crime beats.

“We do not want anything untoward to happen during the event,” said Amer adding that he wants Sarawak to be known as being capable to host a major international event in the eyes of the world.

On another note, Amer also called on the public to be patient during the forum adding that there might be a lot of movements involving government and VVIP vehicles.

“This have to be viewed positively, as this international event will bring a lot of benefits to Sarawak,” he added.

Also present at the flag-off ceremony was Kuching District Police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai.
