KUCHING: A formal agreement has finally been signed for a stage bus operation in Kuching.

Deputy chairman of Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) Datuk Peter Minos said he is happy for that, saying it is time for the people of Kuching and Samarahan to enjoy brand new buses that are user-friendly, safe, reliable and good.

Yesterday, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the federal government and Konsortium BBK Sdn Bhd for the stage bus service transformation (SBST), with KBBK the network operator.

“We are happy that at long last a formal agreement between the government and the bus consortium was signed today (yesterday). It is now a matter of time the people of Kuching City and Samarahan enjoy brand new buses that are user-friendly,” he said.

He said it might take a year for the new buses to be delivered, adding that the Prime Minister’s Department, Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Transportation and CVLB had been working hard on the SBST project.

The bus consortium and many other agencies have been working very hard on the SBST project, he added.

Minos, who is chairman of Kota Samarahan Municipal Council, believed that the people of Samarahan are pleased about the project.

He said the new bus service would help to reduce the financial burden for those who use buses daily, especially the lower income group. The new bus service will also ease traffic congestion in Kota Samarahan, especially during peak hours.

He thanked the federal government for the initiative and for the high financial support in the SBST project, adding that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri has put ‘extra mile’ on the matter.
