KUCHING: Shanghai Shuntian veteran basketball team is currently on a six-day visit to the state capital. They arrived here on Monday after competing in the recent Global Veteran Basketball Championships held in Kuala Lumpur.

The team, accompanied by over 20 musical artists, have already visited places of interest such as Damai beach and a longhouse at Penrissen while enjoying more than a few seafood meals.

The main objective of their trip is to promote cultural and sporting exchange.

The highlight of their visit will be a friendly match against veteran players of the Sentosa Hornbills. Kuching Division Basketball Association chairman Voon Soon Liong told The Borneo Post that basketball fans can look forward to an exciting match with a high standard of play.

The Shanghai veterans include a few players who had represented China in youth international tournaments. They will present a tall order for their Sarawak counterparts.

Their tallest player, who is 2.16m (7’1”), is nearly 1 foot taller than the tallest local opponents. But with four former national players in their roster, Sentosa Hornbills may still have enough talent and experience to mount a credible challenge.

The showdown will take place at MBKS Stadium here on Friday (Nov 24).

The match will proceed immediately after a 1-hour music performance by the Shanghai artists starting at 7pm. The concert programme includes jazz and English numbers. Members of the public are invited to attend.

Admission is free.
