MELAKA: The current leaders need to prepare the country for a better future for the coming generations, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said the future generations would be the beneficiaries of the country’s leadership, hence the current leaders should not just think about themselves.

As such, Najib said, he had implemented, among others, the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) initiative under his leadership with the focus on preparing the country for the young generation.

“The BN (Barisan Nasional) government does not make empty promises but straight away implements (the plans) for our young.

“We must today prepare for the future, for our children and grandchildren. The opposition says all kinds of things to us, never mind, we do the best.”

Najib said this when officiating at the Gen Y, Green The City Melaka 2017 programme at Dataran 1Malaysia in Klebang, here.

Also present were his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor,  Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar; Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.

At the event, Najib also buried a time capsule which will be opened by the country’s future leader, on Jan 1, 2050.

He said besides focusing on TN50, the BN government under his leadership had carried out various initiatives for the young generation and in fact, the 2018 Budget tabled recently, also provided incentives for the coming generation.

“We give out BR1M (1Malaysia People’s Aid), the student’s card for university undergraduates to buy books and so on. We do this for the current and future generations.

“We do things for those coming in the next 10 to 20 years.

“That is why we are building the High Speed Rail (HSR) for who else but the future generation, and around 2022 (it will be operational).”

Najib said the HSR would have a big impact on the lives of future generations, especially around the station areas, including Melaka, and it would shorten the travel time, besides improving the economy of the local residents in the areas involved.

Najib said while the current leaders and BN government were preparing the country for the future, the past leaders should give their full support to the efforts made to ensure these would give the best results.

“When there are new leaders, (the past leaders) should support the new (leaders), then only will the states and country progress further … instead of doing things aimlessly … the elder leaders should come together to do good.”

Najib also said that the country’s young generation needed to have a dream to be a successful generation one day although that dream could be laughed at by others around them.

The prime minister said individuals like Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma and Apple Computer founder Steve Wozniak were clear examples of relentless hard work that made their dream come through.

“Last time who would believe that Jack Ma, a teacher,  and Wozniak who was once expelled from university, could realise their dream but they had dared to dream big and follow their dream. If we have a dream and work hard to achieve that dream, we will succeed,” he said. — Bernama
