Unforgettable weekend at annual SCCS Golden Child Family Day

MIRI: More than 140 participants comprising patients, parents, siblings, medical team and volunteers had an unforgettable weekend at the annual Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) Golden Child Family Day in Miri Marriot Resort & Spa.

The one-day event that was held on Sunday was a joyous one with fun activities for the young patients and their siblings, dance performances by volunteers, doctors and nurses, as well as games with prizes, and lucky draw.

“The aim of Golden Child Family Day is to provide families with the space to rest and rejuvenate their minds while on the cancer-battling journey.

“I was delighted and happy to see so many of the patients, their parents and siblings as well as the medical team and volunteers as each one makes SCCS family stronger,” said SCCS president Jocelyn Hee.

Hee hoped that the event would create a more meaningful and supportive relationship among families, medical team and the SCCS team.

There were also medical talks by Dr Ong Gek Bee and other doctors to equip families with the skills and information to provide better care for the young patients as well as sharing session for parents to relieve themselves from the burden of taking care of their sick child.

“It is a great avenue for them to voice out and certainly to release whatever feelings that have become too overwhelming,” said Hee.

One of the highlights of the event was the presence of the Chief Minister’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang who graced the event.

Upon arrival, she was led on stage to sing and dance to ‘Baby Shark’ and ‘Rasa Sayang’ along with volunteers and the children.

Later, she gave away 30 bouquets of orchids to mothers from each family and presented a generous donation amounting to RM15,000 to help childhood cancer patients and their families.

Also attending the event were Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali; Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini; Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew; Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Hamid Bugo; Datin Kong Shui Lin, the wife of Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin; and Datuk Lorna Enan Muloon who is the wife of former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam.
