MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) has been asked to explain why desluging services here cost the council RM885,000 this year, while the volume cleared per property also appeared higher than normal.

According to Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon, Mayor Adam Yii had said the issue would be referred to the MCC audit committee for further clarification.

“Mayor Adam Yii did not explain the expenses for the desludging services spending during the full council meeting on November 27,” Dr Ting claimed in a press statment yesterday.

According to him, the audit committee should investigate why MCC paid 50 per cent higher for sludge of 4.3 cubic metres in volume  per property compared to Sibu.

He cited the Sewerage Services Department Sarawak, which said the targeted desludge volume for Miri this year was 25,000 cubic metres, which is the same volume targeted for Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

Until last month, MCC had desludged 25,146 cubic metres involving 5,908 properties, an average of 4.3 cubic metres per property, while SMC cleaned 22,094 cubic metres for 7,765 properties – an average of 2.8 cubic metres per property.

It is understood that the volume of a residential septic tank is 2.3 cubic metres.

Dr Ting also called on the audit committee to refer any improper procedures in the desludging services to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
