BINTULU: A married couple caught trying to steal a car at the Civic Centre carpark here on Saturday morning, are ‘expert’ car thieves.

District police chief Supt Zulkipli Suhaili, in a press conference yesterday, said both husband and wife are linked to five vehicle theft cases in the district this year.

“Interrogation of the 33-year-old man and his 26-year-old wife found they were involved in five car theft cases reported in Bintulu this year.

“They are now under remand to assist in our investigation to identify the buyers and locations of the stolen vehicles,” he said.

According to Zulkipli, the couple’s modus operandi was to use duplicated car keys to steal their targeted vehicles.

“The husband is an expert in key duplication because all the cars were stolen using duplicate keys.

“These duplicated keys were made on the spot within 15 minutes of him removing the vehicle’s door lock.”

Zulkipli also revealed that all of the vehicles stolen by the couple were not equipped with alarm systems.
