KUALA LUMPUR: Nelo Vingada has resigned as head coach of the national team yesterday following the poor performances of the Harimau Malaya squad.

Vingada, 64, nicknamed ‘The Professor’ only managed a draw and six defeats since he took over in May.

In a statement issued by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) yesterday, he said the decision was made after a discussion with FAM president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and he took full responsibility for the performance of the team.

“ In this sense of responsibility, I hereby announce to relinquish my position as head of the national team coach with immediate effect, and the president himself accepts my decision,” he said.

His two assistants – Joao Arnaldo Correia De Carvalho and Francisco Jose Bruto Da Costa, also relinquished their respective positions as assistant coaches and national squash fitness coaches.

The Portuguese coach was appointed in the hope of changing the fate of the national team, at least qualifying for the Asian Cup 2019, but it also failed as Malaysia finished bottom of their group. — Bernama
