SIBU: A magistrates’ court here yesterday sentenced a 35-year-old woman to one year and eight months in jail after she pleaded guilty to 51 counts of cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.

Alfizah Ahmad was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which provides for between one and 10 years’ jail, caning and a fine.

The court was earlier told that complainant Mona Lisa Isa, 35, lodged a police report on Oct 1 stating that she had made payments to the accused via online transfer between March 23 and July 26 for domestic and international airline tickets.

According to Mona Lisa, Alfizah had claimed she could purchase cheaper tickets because she worked for an airline.

On Aug 25, Mona Lisa wanted to use the tickets but Alfizah could not produce them.

As a result, Mona Lisa suffered losses totalling RM34,518.70.

In mitigation, defence counsel Ian Lee pointed out that Alfizah is a single mother with two children who are schooling.

“After the offence, her husband pronounced her ‘talak satu’ (divorce) via SMS. As a result, she has only her parents to care for her children,” Lee said.

He said Alfizah had worked with an airline as a duty manager until she resigned in March.

Lee added that the imprisonment term had caused shame on Alfizah and her family.
