1,000 athletes to attend SukSar opening on Dec 14

KUCHING: Members of the public are invited to the official opening ceremony of Sukan Sarawak (SukSar) at Stadium Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak in Petra Jaya on Dec 14 at 3pm.

The official opening ceremony will be attended by the 1,000 competing athletes and chief minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to grace the occasion.

According to Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee, the programme will include the athletes’ oath-taking, raising of SukSar flag and the launching gimmick.

He added that all of the competitions on that day will be held early and will end after lunch time to enable the athletes to join the opening ceremony which will also be attended by local dignitaries including Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who is also SukSar organising committee advisor.

He will be accompanied by Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Snowdan Lawan and the Residents from all of the divisions in the state.

Meanwhile, the majority of the competitions in SukSar are to commence on Dec 14 in accordance with the games schedule and members of the public can get the details on the dates, time and venues from the official website www.suksar.sarawak.gov.my.

The competitions that start on Dec 15 are badminton, lawn bowls, judo, karate, seven a-side rugby, para athletics and para swimming.

Among the competitions which will end early are badminton, cycling, lawn bowls, judo, karate and seven-a-side rugby.

“There are also athletes especially those from outstation who are coming to Kuching as early as Dec 12 and they will be checking into the Games Village on the same day but we have already made the necessary arrangements for them including the hospitality aspects of their stay here,” added Ong.

Apart from the athletes’ arrival, they are expected to be accompanied by their family members and friends the majority of whom are travelling by road.

All participating contingents are travelling to Kuching by road and they are required to check into the Games Village on Dec 13 and all  participants are returning to their respective divisions on Dec 18.
