Filipino with TB denies snatching woman’s phone

KOTA KINABALU: A Filipino claimed trial in the Sessions Court here yesterday to a charge of snatching a woman’s cellphone.

Samit Roy, 23, was charged before judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamed under Section 392 of the Penal Code.

The charge carries a maximum jail term of 14 years or with a fine or with whipping, upon conviction.

The accused, who was defended by counsel Farazwin Haxdy,  allegedly snatched the 24-year-old woman’s cellphone at a pedestrian way behind the old library building here at 8.30am on November 30.

The court fixed March 13-14 this year for the trial of the accused who was denied bail as he had no valid travel document.

The court also ordered the accused to be referred to a hospital if there was a need.

The accused’s counsel informed the court that her client was suffering from tuberculosis and applied for the client to be given proper treatment on a daily basis.
