KUCHING: Athletes from all over the state have started arriving at the Sukan Sarawak (SukSar) village.

Around 1,000 will eventually settle in at Rafflesia College in Kota Samarahan to compete in the 2017 Games from Dec 14 to 17.

Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan, who visited the games village yesterday, said preparations for the games have been smooth.

“We are anticipating more athletes to arrive later today (yesterday) and from my visit today, everything here seems to be ready and in place for the games,” said Snowdan.

All related security and medical aspects, he added, are ready and in place.

On the state-level games which is revived after 27 years, Snowdan said SukSar serves as the best platform for Sarawak to unearth talents in various sports.

“With younger athletes participating, we believe that best performing athletes of this games will stand the chance to be chosen to represent the state for next year’s Sukma in Perak.”

Expected to be held once every two years, this year’s SukSar will see teams from Southern Zone (Kuching, Serian and Samarahan), Western Zone (Betong, Sri Aman and Sarikei, Central Zone (Sibu, Mukah and Kapit) and Northern Zone (Miri, Bintulu and Limbang).

Also present during Snowdan’s visit yesterday was Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee.
