BAU: Serumbu assemblyman Miro Simuh yesterday urged the people living in flood-prone areas in the constituency to remain vigilant in view of the rainy season.

He mentioned Krokong, Siniawan, Keranji and Gumbang as among the most vulnerable.

“The people must remain vigilant and be prepared during the rainy season. As a community, we must help each other during emergencies,” he said when officiating at the closing ceremony of Community Emergency Response Team (Cert) N18 Serumbu.

The event held at Bau Fire Station was attended by State Security and Enforcement Unit in the Chief Minister’s Department’s deputy director Datuk Clarence Rorote Sagon and Kuching Deputy Resident Tuah Suni.

He commended the effort to form Cert in the area which is flood-prone, especially during the rainy season.

Miro pointed out the people in the area, irrespective of races and religion, must continue to live harmoniously and help one another.

“I see this programme as wise and timely to help the people in the area during emergency and other natural disasters,” he asserted, urging participants to use the experience and knowledge obtained during the 3-day training to help the people.

“You (participants) will be frontliners during emergencies before the arrival of emergency authorities,” he said.

He urged the people in the area to be alert to suspicious characters in the area who are mostly foreigners, and report to the police.

Saying there were cases of robberies in the area committed by foreigners, he cited a case where family members were tied up and the robbers took away their vehicle.

“Because most of the villages are situated along the border (with Indonesia), the people must look out for suspicious characters and immediately report to the police,” he said.

The Cert programme is initiated by the state government under the State Security and Enforcement Unit in the Chief Minister’s Department.

Major partners in the programme are the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Welfare Department, Health Department and Civil Defence Force.
