Northern Zone bag eight gold on first day of Games

KUCHING: The Northern Zone topped the medal table of Sukan Sarawak (SukSar) 2017 after bagging eight gold medals prior to the official opening of the state-level sports event yesterday.

The early leaders also secured three silver and three bronze medals, bringing the total medal haul to 14.

The Southern Zone, with four gold medals in the bag, came in second on the table.

They had 12 medals in total after adding four silver and four bronze medals to their tally.

The Western Zone succeeded in obtaining two gold medals followed by one each of silver and bronze medals. They had four medals in total.

At the bottom of the medal table were the Central Zone that managed a gold medal as well as seven silver medals and three bronze medals.

Some of the winners received their respective medals from Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan during an award presentation at the Sarawak Stadium in Petra Jaya here.

Among the events that took off before the official opening were the me’s shot put, 100m (women), 100m (men), 1,500m (women) and 1,500m (men).
