KENINGAU: Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Datuk Haji Sairin Karno proposed to the government that  Senagang be upgraded as a sub-district.

He said that as Senagang was located in the middle of  Tenom and Keningau, having about 5,000 people, the village had the potential to be developed by the government.

“If this is recognized as a sub-district, I believe  development will be available to the people, especially in improving the socio-economic status of the people,” he said at the ‘tagal’ memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the State Fisheries Department and Tagal entrepreneurs at Kampung Senagang here, yesterday.

Sairin, who is also Liawan assemblyman, hoped  tagal entrepreneurs in the state would continue to be proactive in boosting the income of the locals as well as conserve the river ecosystems from pollution.

Meanwhile, State Fisheries Department deputy director Godfery Kissey said since 2002 until now, 544 rivers in the state had tagal, involving about a million different types of fish fries released.

On the MoUs with tagal entrepreneurs, he said he began in 2015 at two villages in Nabawan and the latest at Kampung Senagang and had various benefits such as toilet construction, resting huts, lectures and others.

He said the department also welcomed any traditional entrepreneurs who had not participated in the program to participate.
