KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg targets to have a communication backbone system capable of five to six terabit per second (Tbps).

According to him, a capacity of over five Tbps will be sufficient to meet the increasing demand as the state leapfrogs into digital economy.

“My target is five to six Tbps for the backbone so that it (the internet traffic) is not congested,” he told a press conference after launching the Sistem Kabel Rakyat 1Malaysia (SKR1M) submarine cable system here today.

The new system which spans over 3,800km has an initial capacity of four Tbps and is capable of being upgraded to at least 12.8 Tbps.

Abang Johari said the state government would collaborate with Telekom Malaysia (TM) and Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) toward providing high speed Internet for Sarawakians.

He added that he would share Sarawak’s five-year masterplan (2017-2022) of enhancing digital connectivity with TM and MCMC to steer the state toward the development of digital economy.
