KUCHING: The 2017 Sukan Sarawak (SukSar), revived after 27 years, ended on a high note yesterday.
Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan used the closing ceremony to reiterate the function of the state-level multi-sports event.
“As the state heads towards its vision to become a sports powerhouse, SukSar serves as the best venue for talent scouting, and at the same time a platform to produce world class athletes,” he said in a speech read by Datu Ik Pahon Joyik who is Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports permanent secretary.
“The performances of our athletes at all 14 sports were satisfying, including for Para sports,” he added.
He also urged the athletes brace themselves for the next Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) to be held next year.
“With the next Sukma in Perak, I hope that those who shine in this just concluded event will be given the chance to represent the state, and bring glory to Sarawak once again,” he said.
He also thanked the over 400 officials who made the latest edition of SukSar a success.
“We hope that SukSar 2.0 to be held in Miri in 2019 will be bigger, better and hopefully will be able to unearth more capable and potential talents in sports,” he said.
The closing ceremony of the 2017 SukSar was officiated by Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah.
