200 Kenyah shuttlers compete in PKKS tourney

MIRI: Some 200 participants took part in the Sarawak National Kenyah Association (PKKS) Closed Badminton tournament held at Champion Court here recently.

Organising chairlady Annia Selalang Lawai disclosed that this year’s tournament recorded a higher number of participants compared to last year.

“That goes to show the support and close relationship between the association and the community especially the Kenyahs,” she said.

Players competed in five cagetories The Men’s doubles title went to Nathan Laing and Rayan Berauk while Stephen Avun-Zoric Edom and Timothy Saging-Tommy Tang were second and third.

In the Women’s doubles, Maria Ura and Ume Sim emerged as champions followed by Margerat Anyi-Anisha Anyi and Catherine Charles-Michelle Aquitito.

Top three in the Mixed doubles were Rayan Berauk-Marian Ura, Stephen Avun-Pamela Bawang and Zoric Edom-Stella Baun.

Pimpin Anyie and Ho Chee Kun were Men’s Veteran doubles champions with Mat Akun-Lah Lihan finishing second and Albert Nuam-Usang Saboh third.

Monica Suling and Linda Tuban won the Women’s Veteran title ahead of Irene Ping-Nelly Apoi and Aren Jalong-Ellen Lae.

Cash prizes amounting to RM300, RM250 and RM200 were given out to the first three in each category.

Baram MP Anyi Ngau, who presented the prizes, also announced a RM20,000 grant from his Minor Rural Project (MRP) to PKKS for the tournament.
