KUCHING: The 73 pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Buda in Spaoh, Betong will return to a brand-new school when the school year reopens on January 2 next year.

SK Kampung Buda now has six furnished classrooms, one science room, an administrative room as well as a toilet block. There is also a new open field for the pupils to conduct their extra-curricular activities.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, Lebuhraya Borneo Utara Sdn Bhd (LBU) took up the initiative to rebuild the school with a cost of RM2.8 million using the Industrialised Building System (IBS).

The school had to be rebuilt when a landslide in June 2016 caused severe damages.  Classroom block for Primary 4 to 6, pre-school block, a nine-unit teacher’s quarters, surau, toilets, guard house, science room, textbooks room and resource room collapsed in the incident.

As a result of the devastation suffered by the school,  pupils had no choice but to temporarily attend classes at a nearby community hall.

A simple ceremony will be held on December 29 to hand over the rebuilt school, where Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas is expected to stand witness.
