Brunei win Wuwang Cup challenge, Kuching emerge overall champion

The victorious Kuching team athletes, coaches and officials celebrate their achievement at the end of the competition at Stadium Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak in Petra Jaya.

KUCHING: Brunei enjoyed a fruitful trip to Kuching last week when they won the challenge trophy in the 1st Sarawak International Wuwang Cup Wushu Invitation Championship at Stadium Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak in Petra Jaya on Sunday.

The Brunei team comprising Mohd Adi Salihin Roslan, Mohd Adi Sya’rani Roslan and Basma Lachkar collected 9.41 points in changquan, 9.39 points in nandao and 9.35 points in taijiquan for a total of 28.15 points in the Wuwang Cup challenge to beat Sarawak (Sukma) by only 0.01 points.

Sarawak (Sukma) team was represented by Clement Ting Su Wei who scored 9.54 points in changquan, Lee Hui Xian who scored 9.34 points in nandao and Muhammad Asri Abdul Wahab with 9.26 points in taijiquan.

Brunei also brought home 14 gold, five silver and four bronze medals for a fourth place finish in the medals standings while the Sarawak (Sukma) team collected 15 gold, 11 silver and three bronze medals in the individual events, three golds in duilian and six golds in group events, to finish second overall in the two-day meet.

In the male taolu individual all-rounder chanquan category, Clement Ting was the champion after he scored 19.20 points ahead of teammate Elvic Bong Qian Zheng (18.52) and Brunei’s Ericsson Bong Cheng Loong (17.69).

Sarawak Sukma athlete Stephanie Ngu Chai Ern won the female taolu individual all-rounder chanquan category after she collected 18.66 points while Brunei’s Lim Yee Sean was second with 16.81 points and Kuching’s nine-year old Andra Chan Zhi was third with 16.72 points.

Mohd Adi Salihin picked up another prize in the male individual all-rounder nanquan category when he won with 18.26 points, with the second and third placings going to Sarawak’s Chiew Sow Hong (18.02) and Clement Thian Fung Seng (17.37) respectively.

National youth athlete Lee Hu Xian topped the female individual all-rounder nanquan category when she scored 18.15 points.

Brunei’s Koh Yun C was second with 17.57 points while her teammate Nur Batrisyia Ripin came in third on 17.35 points.

Muhammad Asri won the male individual all-rounder taiji category with 9.48 points in taijiquan and 9.50 points in tajijian for a total of 18.98 points.

Second and third placings went to Brunei’s Hosea Wong Zheng Yu (17.97) and Kuching’s Yong Wei Sen (17.24) respectively.

The top three finishers in the female individual all-rounder taiji category were Basma Lachkar of Brunei, Mo Shin Qi of Miri and Ann Sim Jia Eng of Kuching with 18.47, 16.95 and 16.93 points respectively.

Meanwhile, the male individual all-rounder traditional category saw Kuching Sim Sze Kiat taking the top prize after he collected 16.64 points, followed by teammates Dickson Teo Shoon Jie (16.47) and Canigga Yow Kelvin (16.37).

Another state Sukma athlete Yong Arifah Khairul Kok was the winner of the female individual all-rounder traditional category where she scored 17.36 points ahead of teammate Bong Yun En (17.17) and Kuching’s Lai Shi Yu (16.95).

The overall champions were Kuching with 27 gold, 26 silver and 17 bronze medals.

In fourth to fifth spots were Miri (10-5-5), Sarikei (5-3-2), Sibu (4-12-15) and Singapore (0-0-0).

MBKS councillor Wilfred Yap, who represented Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Prof Dr Sim Kian Hui, closed the event. Also present were Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) cum organising chairman Allen Wong Siew Poh, deputy president cum tournament ambassador James Ting and tournament secretary Lucas Lim.

The international meet organised by WFS and supported by Sarawak Sports Corporation and Sarawak State Sports Council was aimed at giving state Sukma athletes exposure and further promoting wushu as a high performance sport in Sarawak.
