MIRI: It is undeniable that the Christmas celebration in most longhouses in Telang Usan constituency was not as merry as before.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said this was because fewer people went back to their longhouses for the celebration last year.

“This does not augur well if we want to maintain the longhouse spirit.

“Therefore, I hope to see more of our villagers from Telang Usan make efforts to return to their longhouse during special festive seasons,” he told The Borneo Post during his Christmas visit to the people in his constituency recently.

Dennis said during his young days as a youth leader of the church in Long Bedian, he would go to the jungle near the longhouse to get some wild plants as materials to decorate the church.

“Together with other youth members of the church, we would collect the plants and palm leaves to decorate the church building.

“We turned the whole church into fresh greens collected from the wild. Today, most decorative items are bought from the town because church members are better off financially, but the purpose is still the same – to make the church building look its best for the special day, the birth of Lord Jesus.”

In view of that, Dennis reminded church members to remain faithful to God above everything else in life, including politics as well as internal problems and issues in the village.
