Kuching pupils win 19 medals in Malaysia International Mathematics Olympiad

KUCHING: Thirty-five primary school pupils from Kuching participating in the 4th Malaysia International Mathematics Olympiad Competition (Mimo 2017) won two gold, eight silver, and nine bronze in the individual event.

The 4th Mimo Competition held at SJK Lai Meng, Kuala Lumpur on Nov 26 to 27 was organised by Persatuan Matematik Olympiad Malaysia (Permato), SJK (C) Lai Meng KL, SJK (C) Lick Hung and E Mathematics Olympiad System (Emos). The more than 1,200 participants came from Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria and Australia.

Winners from Kuching for Upper Primary (Primary 5 and 6) were Alfred Ting Wei Hong (SJK Chung Hua No. 3) who won gold, Ngu Xin Hong (SJK Chung Hua No. 5) — gold, Orson Tan You Xian (SJK Chung Hua No. 5) — silver, Gloria Tang Jian Xing (SJK Chung Hua No. 5) — silver, Lim Yen Yin (SJK Chung Hua No. 5) — silver, Chai Ming Yu (SJK Chung Hua No. 4) — silver, Tang Kui Sheng (SJK Chung Hua No. 4) — silver, Andrea Ang Qi Xiang (SJK Chung Hua No.4) — bronze, Jerome Lee Cheng Zhe (SJK Chung Hua No. 2) — bronze and Haskel Yu Guang Bo (SJK Chung Hua No. 3) — bronze.

For Middle Primary Primary 3,4), the winners are Ng Shun Li (SK St Joseph) — silver, Joshua Ngieng Xue Zhi (SJK Chung Hua No. 2) — silver, Joel Ng Zi Kang (Tunku Putra School) — silver, Neo Inoue (Tunku Putra School) — bronze, Hubert Yu Guang Ze (SJK Chung Hua No. 3) — bronze, Edmund Ting Wei Han (SJK Chung Hua No. 3) — bronze, Su Hung Seng (SJK Chung Hua No. 1) — bronze, Chua Poh Hui (SJK Chung Hua No. 4) — bronze, and Alldrich Ang Zhi Yuan (SJK Chung Hua No. 4) — bronze.

Permato is a non-profit organisation of mathematics teachers committed to develop and promote excellence in Mathematics Olympiad education and training in Malaysia.

It was founded in 1996 and registered under Registry of Society Malaysia (Ministry of Home Affairs Malaysia) under the category of Education Profession.

It compiles materials and aids in mathematics education and training; organises seminars, workshops and conferences to assist teachers and trainers in teaching using modern problem-solving techniques.

Permato has carried out training classes in more than 100 primary and secondary schools in Malaysia.

Recently, it completed teacher training in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Sibu conducted by Malaysia Mathematics Olympiad National Team coach leader Yang Kuo Fang.

Qualified students are given opportunity to participate in other international competitions overseas.
