MIRI: Faulty drainage is said to be a key factor contributing to recurring flash floods hitting Kampung Sealine Atas at Lutong here.

Many houses there are under several feet of floodwater, following the downpour that had persisted since Friday.

“This problem occurred many times last year – now after it has been raining non-stop, our houses are being flooded,” said a villager.

He said the drain in front of his house could not cope with the high overflow of water due to heavy rain.

“I think the drainage here is the problem – there could be blockage. This problem has been going on for a long time. There seems to be no proper planning by the authorities in overcoming the recurrence of flash floods, which have caused damage of properties,” he said, requesting anonymity

Fellow villager Linda Jemat said they all had to park their cars on the main road, adding that the water level had yet to go down even after several days.

“We hope that the authorities concerned could come and address the problem of flash floods hitting Kampung Sealine Atas, which have destroyed many properties and killed many livestock animals like chickens,” she appealed.

A survey at 1pm yesterday showed that the water level had begun to subside as the rain had stopped. Many villagers were also seen clearing away debris from their house compounds.
