Contraband seized in house raid in Tinjar, man arrested

MIRI: The state Marine police arrested a 38-year-old man and seized RM34,740 worth of contraband cigarettes, liquors and firecrackers during an ambush at a house in Tinjar, Baram on Jan 9.

In a statement to the press yesterday, its commander ACP Salehuddin Mat Zaman said the ambush led by ASP Dunsmore Intih was conducted at 10am following a tip-off.

“Upon checking, various types of contraband cigarettes, liquors and firecrackers were found in the house.

“A local man was found in the house, believed to be the caretaker, and was immediately arrested,” he said.

A total of 181 cartons of cigarettes of various brands worth RM26,760, 94 bottles of various types of liquor and 144 crates of beer worth RM5,000 were seized.

“Sixty-six boxes of various types of firecrackers worth RM2,980 were also seized,” he said.

The case is investigated under the Customs Act, 1967.
