MIRI: A furniture factory worker who was arrested for allegedly murdering his girlfriend’s daughter was ordered by a magistrate’s court here yesterday to be remanded for seven days to facilitate police investigations.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa issued the order after allowing the remand application submitted by senior investigating officer ASP Lee Chee Keat from the central police sation here.

In his application, Lee told the court that at 5.55pm on Tuesday (Jan 9), a police patrol unit spotted a sedan car parked in a suspicious manner near a bush along Jalan Perlis in Kuala Baram.

The boot of the car was open and a man was standing next to it. When he saw the policemen, the man immediately closed the boot and rushed back into the car and sped off.

The MPV team chased after the man for 5km and succesfully detained him at the junction leading to Miri Port in Kuala Baram.

The policemen ordered the man to open the car boot and saw the body of a 13-year-old girl.

The man, the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, was arrested and taken to the central police station here for further action.

In his application, Lee said the seven-day remand made under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code on the suspect, 33, from Kuala Lumpur, is needed to allow the police to conduct a detailed investigation into the case listed under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Besides, the police need time to record statements from the suspect and the witnesses, thus releasing the suspect early could jeapordise the investigation.

The remand period will expire on Jan 17.
