MIRI: Four SK Anchi Miri pupils have been praised for their civic-mindedness after photos emerged of them helping a senior citizen to cross the road.

The photos show the pupils stopping traffic to enable the man, who depends on a walking frame, to slowly manoeuvre across the road in front of the school.

“These pupils are an example of how they practise the teachings of the teachers of helping others at school and show how helpful they are. Well done.  A good example for the younger generation to follow,” a parent named Abu Bakar told The Borneo Post yesterday.

“Teach our children to be kind and helpful to elderly people, as we will be at that level when the time comes.”

Fellow parent Hadiah Pekok agreed that credit should be given to the boys for being kind and thoughtful.

“Thumb ups to the boys. Keep up the good work,” she said.

When contacted, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Senastian Ting such civic-mindedness and moral values must be inculcated among the younger generation.

He said this was an excellent example of respecting one’s elders.

“I wish to congratulate SK Anchi, the teachers and parents, for succeeding in such good teaching for the children,” he added.
