SIBU: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) today confirmed that express boat service plying Sibu-Kuching sector has been temporarily suspended from Jan 10 until Jan 14 due to bad weather and choppy waters.

Notices have been put at the ticketing counter to inform riverine commuters of the temporary disruption of the boat service, according to SRB Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi.

Likewise, the service from Kuching to Sibu too has been affected since Jan 10.

“Passengers’ safety is the Board’s top priority. Service for this sector (Sibu/Kuching) will resume on Jan 15,” he told The Borneo Post when contacted.

Hatta was asked on the authenticity of the Facebook posting stating the temporarily disruption of the express boat service plying Kuching/Sibu/Kuching sector.

“There will be one boat from Kuching to Sibu on Jan 15, taking off at 8.30am. Another boat from Sibu to Kuching taking off at 11.30am also on Jan 15.

“There are only two boats operating in the sector – Bahagia 1 and Bahagia 8. There is only one trip for Kuching/Sibu and Sibu/Kuching sector daily, unlike the busy sector of Sibu/Song/Kapit,” he said.

Hatta said only usual number of commuters are affected by the temporarily disruption of service for Sibu/Kuching route as most prefer other modes of transportation during the inclement weather.

He, however, said boat services for Sibu/Song/Kapit sector are operating as usual.

Hatta advised the public to call their operation office here on 084-316676 should they require further information.
