MIRI: The swift action of villagers in Long Luping during the gas leak of the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline early Wednesday morning has drawn praise from Ba Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian.

He said the action of the villagers in informing Petronas staff in Lawas of the leak and getting them to shut the valves of the pipeline was indeed commendable.

“What the people did in this gas leak incident was swift and once they knew what had happened, they contacted the Petronas officer in Lawas who informed and instructed the person in charge of the pipeline to close the valves,” he said yesterday.

Baru said based on the information he received, there was ‘some kind of explosion’, adding that the photo of the site sent to him “speaks for itself.”

However, he said Petronas should be allowed to investigate and rectify the matter and to make sure there is no environmental impact.

Meanwhile, a Petronas spokesperson, when contacted yesterday, denied that an explosion had occurred at the site, while a spokesperson from the Lawas Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said there was no report of a fire breaking out.

“Our (Bomba) role is to ensure that there is no fire, while the investigation aspect is left for Petronas to handle accordingly,” he said.
